Baltimore City Provides Free Wifi At The Inner Harbor

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Two thirds of Americans have smartphones. A survey by equipment makers shows those users want more wifi in more places. And, of course, for free.

Mike Schuh reports the city has answered the call.

Millions have visited the Inner Harbor, and the city hopes to attract millions more.

"Baltimore will offer free wifi access on the Inner Harbor promenade.

Sure, tourists will benefit, but they know locals will soon catch on.

"Way to go. Great job. Finally something free for the community, for Baltimore, for tourists tapping in without having to worry about paying for internet down here," said Sarah Longenecker, of Baltimore.

"We can see the Inner Harbor serving as a great place for business meetings, people walking across Pratt Street," said Lori Schwartz, Waterfront Partnership.

The speed is not bad, well worth it to a wifi user who'd much rather use a faster wifi connection for free than pay for a slower cell hookup.

"No one wants to pay extra for the cellular phone network. So wifi is the easier way, and it's faster," said Victor Escobar, of Baltimore.

It's not a free box lunch, but free wifi boxes may be the next best thing.

The cost for the city to continue providing the free wifi is $2000 a month.
