Ceremony Marks Anniversary Of Navy Yard Shooting
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Top Navy officials and family members are among more than 2,000 people remembering the Washington Navy Yard shootings a year after 12 people were killed.
The Washington Post reports that during a memorial service Tuesday morning, Navy Vice Adm. William Hilarides, the commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, read the name of each person who died. Each name was followed by the toll of a bell.
President Barack Obama issued a statement saying the nation is improving security at military installations. He says the country should renew the call for common-sense reforms to reduce gun violence.
An evening memorial service also is planned. Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer will speak to honor those who died.
The gunman, a former Navy reservist, was fatally shot by police.
