WEATHER BLOG: Farewell Summer

The weather pattern will be treating us kindly as we prepare to bid farewell to summer. The Autumn Equinox will occur at 10:29 p.m. this evening, and we will have a chilly night to kick off the brand new season.

First, we'll have a fairly gentle breeze Monday as bright sunshine returns to much of the area. While there were some intervals of sun Sunday, it was also rather humid with a south or southwest wind ahead of the latest cold front..That front, which has managed to produce a few scattered showers late Sunday afternoon and for a short while Sunday night (and not really reaching most coastal cities until around midnight), has reached coastal New England and will continue to push out to sea early Monday.

Therefore, we should have a prevailing wind out of the northwest for the balance of  Monday. It will be less humid, and most temperatures will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s this afternoon. As a high pressure system builds into the East Monday night and Tuesday, there will be a mainly clear sky and less wind Monday night.

Although we must be mindful that patchy dense fog could form late Monday night in some of the river valleys, most places will just turn out clear and quite chilly.

A light jacket will definitely be appropriate Tuesday morning and during the early-morning hours for the rest of the week as sunshine dominates Tuesday and Wednesday, and the sky will be fairly clear during the nighttime hours. Obviously, without much wind, large temperature ranges can be expected (40s in most suburbs and rural areas and the low 50s in the big cities).
