Former Baltimore Colts head coach and University of Miami head coach Howard Schnellenberger joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn and Jason La Canfora to talk about his new book “Passing the Torch: Building Winning Football Programs with a Dose of Swagger Along the Way” and also to speak about his time with the Colts and other experiences.
Scott asked Howard about his time in Baltimore with the Colts under owner Bob Irsay. Schnellenberger called them “They were lesson learning.” He also recounted his firing in front of a national audience. “I wasn’t really ready to do it, he did it. After all I said to him on the sideline to try to convince him it was labeled immoral and not very becoming to fire somebody on national television on the sideline over a quarterback situation in front of a football team.”
Jason asked Howard about how he feels with sports being under the microscope 24/7 now as opposed to when Howard was coaching. The conversation then shifted to who influenced him in his career. “Well that’s what my whole books about. We call it the passing of the torch and it dawned on me as my career ends that I may be the only person that had such a great 55 year experience, coaching college most of the time and coaching pro ball some of the time. But I was mentored by 5 hall of famers.”
