5th Annual Dominator Memorial Walk/Run Benefits Childhood Cancer
FOREST HILL, Md. (WJZ)--If you like to run or walk you can do it Saturday in Harford County and at the same time raise some much needed money for the fight against pediatric cancer.
Ron Matz has more on how a mother's love for her superhero son is helping to keep his memory alive and at the same time help others.
Dominic Osorio was only seven when he lost his battle with brain cancer in 2009.
"He fought the battle for two years going through chemotherapy and radiation. He had two surgeries, but unfortunately the cancer took a hold of him. He was comatose in September of 2009 and gained his angel wings in November of 2009," said his mother, Nicole Spagna.
That's when Spagna decided to do something.
"Dominic loved to run, as most little boys do, so Blue Dot and myself decided to put on this event to honor his memory and to help raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer," Spagna said.
Saturday's walk and run starts at Blue Dot headquarters and raises money for the Do Believe Foundation.
It's a family affair for everyone who loved the little boy with a big smile.
"We miss him very, very much but he really made it easy. I know that sounds strange, but he was always smiling. His love of life made it that much easier on us," Spagna said.
"My brother and I were very, very close. I still think of him," said Kristina Osorio, Dominic's sister. "As my best friend today, I want to raise awareness not just for kids who have cancer but for the siblings as well."
"This event means everything for us. We just want to bring awareness to pediatric cancer. We want people to know that September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month," said Gabrielle Amig, Dominic's aunt.
In its first four years, the event has raised over $60,000.
"I was lucky enough to be by his side through all of his treatment," Amig said. "It's sad. Every day I wake up and miss my nephew very much. We do this for him, and we do this because we don't want any other family to go through what we had to go through."
Blue Dot is the main sponsor of Saturday's walk and run. It all starts at 7 a.m. with registration in Forest Hill.
