Metro Begins Replacement Of Bethesda Escalators

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Metro is beginning a two-year project to replace the escalators at its Bethesda station, home to some of the longest escalators in the world.

The work begins Monday. Throughout the project, two of the three escalators will remain in operation, while the third will be out of commission.
The escalators are more than 200 feet long and are the second longest in the Western Hemisphere, trailing only those at the nearby Wheaton station. The escalators are more than 30 years old.

A TV station in Washington reports that most of the work will occur overnight when the station is closed.
