WEATHER BLOG: Storm System Moving Out

The storm system that has impacted the region over the last few days is finally beginning to move off the east early this morning. Through the day Thursday, the system spun off of the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. This combined with high pressure over the Ohio Valley created a modest pressure gradient and wind gusts near 30 mph in some locations.

As expected, clouds broke during the late morning, and temperatures climbed into the lower to middle 60s, specifically reaching a high of 63 at BWI and 64 at the Science Center.

As we head into the day, that pesky system will continue to loosen its grip on the area, and conditions will be quite nice with a blend of sun and clouds. With this system still spinning in the Gulf of Maine, the pressure gradient will be tight, so there will still be a stiff northwesterly breeze gusting over 20 mph at times. Since the flow will be northwesterly, we will have a downsloping component, and this will allow temperatures to rebound nicely into the middle 60s.

I think 67 will do it Friday as we mix down from about 900mb. These warm conditions will continue into Saturday with temperatures in the 60s once again. I think Saturday will be mostly sunny, and with similar mixing conditions, we should be about the same temperature-wise compared to Friday. By later Saturday, a disturbance will pass to the north of the region, and a trailing cold front will approach during the evening and into the overnight. With limited moisture to work with, there will not be much in the way of precipitation, but there could be a shower around Saturday night.

By Sunday, the front will clear the area to the east, and conditions will be pleasant with a blend of sun and clouds. We will be mixing from about 825mb this day, so it will be quite windy through the afternoon. I would not be surprised if we gust over 25 mph during the peak mixing hours. We will have a west northwesterly flow, so we will down slope nicely. I like 66 for a high, which accounts for the nice downsloping flow.
