Inmate Who Fraudulently Bought Cars Sentenced

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- An inmate who bought cars and other items while in prison using stolen identities and had accomplices stash the items has been sentenced to more than 7 years in prison.

Thirty-year-old Lamonte X. Smith of Accokeek was also ordered to forfeit and pay restitution of $115,000 at sentencing Monday in federal court in Greenbelt.

According to his plea agreement, Smith was incarcerated at the Maryland Reception Diagnostic and Classification Center in Baltimore in 2011. Prosecutors say Smith, using smuggled cellphones, fraudulently obtained identifying information of bank account and credit card holders.

Authorities say Smith, from prison, bought cars, clothes and other items and had co-conspirators direct shipment of the items to his home or a storage unit in Waldorf.
