Md. Gas Prices Hit Lowest Point In Years
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's the moment drivers have been waiting for! Gas prices here in Maryland are at a nearly four-year low. But how long will it last?
Meghan McCorkell has more on what we could see.
The statewide average is now under $3 a gallon and experts say it could go even lower.
For four years, drivers have felt the pain at the pump.
"It puts a hurting on the wallet, that's for sure," said one driver.
Now filling up is getting slightly less painful as gas prices fall.
"It means so much because I'm a college student and I don't have that much money so when I see this, it makes me so happy because I can actually afford to go places now," said Kevin Moran.
The national average for a gallon of regular is now $3.03. Here in Maryland, it's $2.98. Maryland is one of 18 states across the country where gas prices have fallen below $2.99 a gallon.
"We spend around $100 monthly but now I think it's coming down so we can save $20 per month," said Raghothama Chaerkady.
And experts say the prices could get even lower.
"They're dropping even more than expected this year, primarily because of the cost of crude oil. We've been seeing crude oil drop consistently," said AAA spokesperson Ragina Cooper Averella.
The refineries have also switched over to the less expensive winter blends---but once they go back to a summer blend, you may see a jump at the pump.
"Have to remember: once we see the spring, however, that we will probably see the return to higher gas prices as demand goes up," Averella said.
But for now, drivers can enjoy an early gift as we move into the holiday season. Officials say gas prices have fallen 39 cents a gallon since Labor Day weekend. The last time average gas prices were under $3 a gallon was December 2010.
