N.J. Gov. Chris Christie Helps Take Larry Hogan To The Top

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The Christie factor. Many say it was political star power that took Larry Hogan to the top.

Marcus Washington has more on what one politician brought to the Maryland governor's race.

When it came to campaigning for Maryland's governor seat, candidates did not hold back with bringing the political star power. Brown had the Clintons and the Obamas, but Hogan had one that seems to have done the job.

It was the endorsement many will argue took Larry Hogan to the top. New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie campaigned in Maryland for Hogan--not once, not twice, but a total of four times.

"I tell you what. With his help, I actually think the biggest upset in the country is going to be right here in Maryland," Hogan said.

A shocking surprise to many that the candidate, considered the underdog, won the Maryland governor's seat.

"This is Maryland. It's a blue state, it's a deep blue state, it's a Democratic state. And you all can do it, because here I am living proof you can do it," Christie said.

During each visit, Governor Christie made it quite clear he was not just here to campaign for Hogan, but to stick it to the current sitting Maryland governor Martin O'Malley.

"I want to look right into the camera and talk directly to my friend Marty. Hey Marty, don't waste your time being nervous, just get ready to clear out your officer and turn it over to Larry Hogan," Christie said.

It was a partnership that achieved what many said could not be done again so soon.

"A Republican in Maryland? Come on. That's nearly impossible. Well, they are not laughing any more, are they?" said Hogan.

At least 24 states elected Republican governors Tuesday.
