Former Sparrows Point Steelworkers Honored

SPARROWS POINT, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's two U.S. senators are leading a group of officials in honoring former steelworkers at Sparrows Point near Baltimore.

Democrats Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin are among the officials scheduled to speak at the event Monday.

The ceremony honors the legacy of those who worked at the old Bethlehem Steel mill site as a new owner strives to clean up and redevelop the area.

Sparrows Point Terminal LLC signed an agreement with the state in September to clear the way for redevelopment.

The Bethlehem Steel plant was the largest in the world in the 1950s. It employed 31,000 workers at its peak. It closed in 2012.
