Baltimore Police Officer Stable, Recovering After Being Shot

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ---A Baltimore City police officer is in the hospital after being shot during a traffic stop. Rochelle Ritchie has the details.

The officer is out of surgery and in stable condition. Police have recovered a gun that may have been used in the shooting.

It's an unfortunate reminder of the danger Baltimore police officers face while on the job, after an officer is shot just after 7 p.m. Sunday.

"This is a difficult situation, difficult time and I thank the mayor for standing in support," Batts said.

Baltimore police officials said the injured officer and his partner stopped a car after noticing suspicious activity when shots rang out.

"The officer was brought in by his partner. He had one gun shot that we saw. The surgery team was down immediately and within a few minutes he was taken up to the operating room," Dr. Lisa Kirkland of Sinai Hospital said.

The shooting happened at the 2600 Gwynns Falls Parkway near Coppin State University and Mondawmin Mall.

"We have three people in custody and have recovers the gun," Commissioner Batts said.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts is not releasing a lot of information about the officer, but said he has been with the department for about three years.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the state attorney and Councilman Nick Mosby all stood by Commissioner Batts to express their support for the officer.

"We are praying for the best for his family and the Baltimore City Police Department family," Mayor Rawlings-Blake said.

Police Commissioner Batts said the shooting of officers is a stark reminder of the dangers men and women in blue face every day in uniform and on the job.

"I am not caught on the irony of the time of the situation. We have had marches nation wide, but the fact we have lost lives in police custody... I wonder if we are going to have those marches as officers are shot too," Commissioner Batts said.

Baltimore City police have not released the names of the people in custody or a motive.
