Man Charged In Baltimore City Police Officer's Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A man has been charged in the shooting of a Baltimore City police officer. The officer is in stable condition.

Rochelle Ritchie has more on the new details emerging.

That officer is in stable condition after undergoing surgery late Sunday night. The man charged in the shooting is no stranger to Baltimore City police.

Nineteen-year-old Donte Jones now sits behind bars, charged in the shooting of Officer Andrew Groman.

"This individual is a 19-year-old member of our community who, at the age of 19, is on parole, probation, who has had many contacts with the police, is a violent, repeat offender. Many of his arrests were for gun violence," said Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez.

Police say Jones confessed to shooting the officer just after 7 p.m. Sunday at the 26-hundred block of Gwynns Falls Parkway, near Coppin State University and Mondawmin Mall.

"This is a difficult situation, a difficult time, and I thank people for standing in in support," said Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.

Police say Jones was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over after another officer on foot patrol smelled marijuana. The vehicle stopped at a gas station.

"He then radioed for the vehicle to be stopped and the vehicle left the gas station within the block, it was stopped by a patrol unit," an official said.

Four people were in the car, including Jones. Police say when Jones was asked to step out of the car, he resisted.

"At some point in time, there was a discharging of the firearm and there was a firing of the Taser," said an official.

Police say Jones fired three shots. One of the bullets hit Officer Groman in the abdomen and he was rushed to Sinai Hospital. Jones is now charged with attempting to kill Officer Groman, who joined the police force after serving as a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania.

"That is one indication of the caliber of individuals that choose this profession," Rodriguez said.

Police say the gun used in the shooting has been recovered. They also say the other three people questioned in this shooting have been released.

Officer Groman is the second city police officer to be shot this year.
