Familiar Face Pours Her Passion For Animals Onto The Page

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Animal rights activists share a passion and aren't afraid of letting the rest of the world know where they stand.

Now, as Mike Schuh reports, a face familiar to longtime WJZ viewers is emerging as a force for change.

She was one of the family. Deborah Stone and Al Sanders announced Denise Koch's pregnancy to the world. She graced our airwaves for 15 years. Now, she's still reporting on what matters. Only, her focus is very, very specific.

From her home in Pikesville, her passion for animals--particularly shelter animals--pours onto the page.

"Well, I don't even have to work hard to come up with ideas for stories," said Stone.

"I write a blog and it's called Save 90 because shelters, good shelters, aspire to save 90 percent of the animals that come into their care," she continued.

Her blog reaches 3,000 readers and doesn't pull punches. She calls out the shelters she thinks can do a better job and save more lives. The blog raises money.

"This is love is through the Feline Rescue Association," said Jen Kahn, Feline Rescue Association.

Kahn's organization has received a $750 donation from Deborah's blog--money to keep cats alive.

"We have a lot of medical cases. So, a lot of guys we pull, they wouldn't have lasted at a shelter because they would have been put down due to medical issues."

Her own dog, Dewey, is her third rescue from a shelter. Seeing a scared animal transform into a member of the family is what motivates her.

"I'm calling people out with facts. And to me, that's really journalism. And to me, maybe that's more journalism than I was ever able to do because I have the luxury of time," Stone said.

Something she says the animals in the shelters don't have.

The name of Deborah's blog is Save 90. Click here for more info.
