Md. Police Attend Funeral For Slain NYPD Officer
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Saying goodbye. Thousands of officers from around the country head to New York as an officer killed two weeks ago is laid to rest.
Marcus Washington reports a group of Maryland officers left early Sunday morning to attend the funeral.
From the moment officers graduate from the police academy, they say they stand as one. Officer Wenjian Liu's funeral was no different.
Before the sun could rise, they stood as one.
"It's very easy to get up and show support. It's the least we can do," said one officer.
Joining to support their fallen brother in blue.
"There's a nationwide brotherhood and sisterhood amongst law enforcement officers. And whenever a tragedy happens, strikes one organization, all other organizations try to reach out and help and show support," another officer said.
Sunday morning, 25 officers from various Maryland law enforcement agencies traveled to New York to show support at Officer Wenjian Liu's funeral.
The 32-year-old officer was killed along with his partner while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn.
"When something like this happens across the country, we try to show our support," said Det. Keith Tate, Baltimore City Police.
"Once you graduate from the academy and become a police officer, it doesn't matter where at in the country, we're just one big blue line," said Issac Hester, Baltimore City Police.
It's a reminder for all officers that it could easily happen to them, but it's also a reminder they are not alone.
"We're here to help and show their families that we support each other and we have each others back," said Paul Hayden, Maryland Transit Administration Police Department.
All officers who attended the funeral services in New York did so on their own time.
During their return from the funeral, two city police officers were injured in a crash along the New Jersey Turnpike. Police say the injuries are non-life threatening.
