2 People Die In Baltimore From Exposure To Cold

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore's health commissioner says there have been two deaths in the city this month attributed to cold temperatures.

The health commissioner, Dr. Leana Wen, says a homeless man died from exposure to the cold on Jan. 6. An elderly person who was living in a home without heat or electricity died on Jan. 24.

Wen says the two deaths are "tragic and preventable." She notes that cold temperatures and low wind chills can be life-threatening conditions for vulnerable populations including the homeless and the elderly.

State health officials say there have been 12 cold weather-related deaths in all of Maryland this winter.
