Retired Md. National Guard Officer To Get Purple Heart

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A retired Maryland National Guard officer who was wounded in Iraq in 2007 is set to receive a Purple Heart.

Maj. Gen. Linda Singh, the top officer in the Maryland National Guard, will present the medal to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jerry Godwin at a ceremony on Sunday.

Godwin suffered a traumatic brain injury and hearing loss after rockets were fired on a U.S. base in Iraq on Nov. 5, 2007.

The ceremony will be held Sunday at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore.
