Bob Haynie: Iowa Beats Up Maryland

The Iowa Hawkeyes handed the Maryland Terrapins yet another bad road loss on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. In the process, they also did some physical damage to Terps' freshman guard Melo Trimble.

Trimble was bleeding after a collision with a camera man caused a hand-held camera to fall on his face in the first half. Later in the half, Iowa center Adam Woodbury poked him in the right eye severe enough to cause visible damage and earn a flagrant foul.

To his credit, Trimble kept coming back and even led the Terps in scoring with 20 points. Unfortunately, for head coach Mark Turgeon, Trimble was the only player who seemed to bring it as Maryland was pummeled, 71-55.

The Hawkeyes shot 64.3% from the floor as Maryland's defense continues to be offensive. Aaron White scored 17 points for Iowa and Woodbury matched his career high with 16.

With the loss, Maryland fell to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes improved to 15-8 and 6-4.

Maryland's road miseries continue to baffle everyone. Earlier in the season, the Terps earned victories at Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Purdue. They also beat Iowa State in Kansas City.

As we are now into February, Maryland doesn't even compete away from the XFINITY Center. They struggle with turnovers and poor shot selection which bogs down the offense. Defensively, Maryland has a hard time stopping any team from scoring. Whether it's in the paint or on the perimeter, the Terps are challenged on defense.

Next up for Maryland is a rematch with an Indiana team that ran them out of Bloomington (89-70) in late January. Wednesday night's game will be in College Park.

Given their struggles on the road, the Terps can ill-afford to start dropping games at home. They still need to build on that NCAA resume.

A win over Indiana would help, obviously.
