Theater In Western Md. Marks 100th Year With Renovation

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Supporters of the performing arts in Hagerstown are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the renovated Maryland Theatre.

The Herald-Mail reports that the venue reopened Thursday after a $1.5 million project to replace the seats and upgrade the heating and cooling systems.

Mayor David Gysberts says the renovation demonstrates the community's commitment to arts and culture.

Theater officials gave special thanks to the local Hamilton Family Foundation for donating more than $400,000 for plaster work after part of an upper balcony ceiling fell during a performance in 2013.The theater is home to the Miss Maryland pageant and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra.
