Dad Accidentally Shoots Son While Cleaning Gun

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) - Anne Arundel County police are investigating how a man accidentally shot his son while he was cleaning his gun Tuesday evening.

Police responded to the 600 block Kuethe Road in Glen Burnie around 7:45 p.m. for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old Halethorpe man suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach. The victim's girlfriend and father were also at the scene.

Police learned from 54-year-old Ronald Ernest Phelps that he was cleaning his shotgun when it accidentally discharged, hitting his son.

According to police, Phelps was prohibited from owning a firearm, however detectives concluded the shooting was accidental.

Officers searched the home and located the shotgun, a rifle and ammunition. It also issued a search warrant and recovered 200 grams of marijuana from the apartment.

Phelps was charged Phelps with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of marijuana, as well as illegally possessing a shotgun, rifle, and ammunition as a prohibited person.

The son is expected to survive. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
