Marylanders Digging Out After Weekend Winter Blast

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (WJZ) -- Thousands across Maryland are dealing with the aftermath of Saturday's winter blast. The snow storm left several inches on the ground, causing treacherous conditions for drivers.

Tracey Leong has more on residents still digging out.

The counties were slammed with snow. Sunday was all about cleaning and clearing the roads, walkways and driveways.

Shovels in hand, folks in Westminster are now cleaning up what Saturday's snow storm left behind.

"I never minded shoveling snow. Somewhat therapeutic. It's cheaper than counseling," said Mike Johnson.

Like many people in Carroll County, Mike Johnson is now able to get outside, clearing his driveway and preparing for the work week.

"The whole downtown shut down yesterday. Half of it didn't even open," he said.

Sunday's conditions made it easier to clean up.

"It's warm. It feels good and things are melting, so there you go," said Vernon Hart.

Crews in Howard County took advantage of the break in the weather to clear walkways and spread salt for the upcoming storms.

Shoveling is essential for businesses in Ellicott City because they rely heavily on foot traffic.

"Traditionally and throughout the year, anytime the weather is poor, the businesses suffer. So, again, that's one of the reasons why we want to come down here so that our tenants can at least have access," said Linda Fisher.

Fisher works in Ellicott City and says business drops about 50 percent when the snow piles up.

"We want to get down here and take care of our little piece of heaven in Ellicott City," she said.

But people who live and work in the counties say they're always preparing for what Mother Nature will dump on them.

"It's always something, you know. It could be worse. The other year when we got four foot or whatever it was. That was rough," said Hart.

Traffic seems to be back to normal. The big concern is the melted snow refreezing with temperatures dropping, making the roads icy and dangerous.

Use caution if you drive overnight.
