Groundbreaking Held For Baltimore's Harbor Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The city's newest and biggest waterfront development project is growing.

Pat Warren reports Wednesday was the official groundbreaking for Harbor Point, a billion dollar community of homes, jobs and the Exelon headquarters.

If you haven't seen it yet, look up---Harbor Point is growing bones.

Folks from Harbor East to Fells Point are noticing.

"I think it's a wonderful thing," said one.

The project cleared political, community and environmental hurdles and is now filling 27 acres of waterfront wasteland between Harbor East and Fells Point.

"Harbor Point for me is an example of the kinds of projects that positively impact residents for today and for tomorrow," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

The first of 8,000 construction workers are getting paychecks now---and Larry Caudle has hopes for tomorrow.

"I'm actually a lighting supplier so I'm actually out here trying to get some business from these guys, but it's difficult," Caudle said. "But there's a lot of business and hopefully I can break one of these doors down."

While others simply wait for the doors to open.

"I think it'll bring a lot of people down here, being able to shop," said Megan Pfaff. "I think it's great."

Once completed, Harbor Point is expected to generate more than $18 million in new city tax revenue.

The tax revenue generated is $18.4 million annually and in addition to construction, 9,000 permanent jobs.
