Terps Melo Trimble Named Finalist For Tisdale Award
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has announced that Maryland Terrapins freshman guard Melo Trimble has been named as a finalist for the 2015 Integris Wayman Tisdale Award - given to the National Freshman of the Year in Men's College Basketball.
The award will be presented at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Also to be presented at the gala are the Oscar Robertson Trophy (College Player of the Year) and the Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award.
Trimble, 20, from Upper Marlboro, Md., leads the Terps in assists (91) and steals (38) and minutes played. He also leads all of the Big Ten in free throw percentage and is fifth in scoring (averaging 16.1 points per game).
The USBWA decided to rename the National Freshman of the Year Award the Tisdale Award after the late Wayman Tisdale who passed away a year before after a difficult 2-year battle with cancer. Tisdale, who played at the University of Oklahoma, was named a first team All-American as a freshman in 1983. He went on to play 12 season in the NBA.
