Snow Cripples Commute In Frederick Co.

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)--Traveling west on interstate 70 was treacherous as another round of winter cripples Maryland on Thursday.

Alex DeMetrick has more on the conditions.

A lot of horsepower was reduced to a crawl with the drive from Baltimore to Frederick.

Roadblocks stopped it all together, leaving drivers to sit it out.

Things didn't improve until a tractor-trailer that had spun out was towed away. Which got things moving again, although it made for close quarters for crews trying to clear the interstate.

On Frederick County feeder roads and streets it was a lot easier to move snow. Traffic was at a minimum after state police declared a snow emergency for the county.

"When they are not on the roads, it makes it easier for us to clear the roads without having to worry about vehicles being stuck in snow banks and that kind of thing," said Seamus Mooney,  Frederick County Emergency Manager.

If there is a silver lining to the weather it's that this storm came with plenty of warning. Which didn't make dealing with it any easier especially for businesses with customers and employees staying home.

"Luckily for us, most of the other businesses have closed for the day so we're getting a lot of business, but it's still a lot slower than usual," Amanda Stinson, Pretzel & Pizza Creations

But then, it was more snow than usual.
