4 Proms On 1 Night Means Stress For Merchants In Md. Town

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Prom night is stressing out some merchants in the western Maryland city of Cumberland, where four area high schools have scheduled formal spring dances on May 9.

The Cumberland Times-News reports in its Friday edition that some formal-wear outfitters, florists and restaurateurs say the Allegany County school board should have made the schools stagger their prom dates.

That's not going to happen this year. The school system says changing any of the dates now would likely cause more problems than it solves.

Police Capt. Greg Leake says his department can afford to send just one officer instead of two to provide security at each school. But he says many officers have children who attend the schools, so those officers will help monitor the dances.
