Md. Officer Was Driving Girlfriend Home When Cruiser Crashed

LANHAM, Md. (WJZ) -- A devastating crash takes the life of an off-duty Prince George's County police officer. Now new video is released that could provide clues about what led up to the crash.

Meghan McCorkell has the latest on the investigation.

Police are searching for more witnesses so they can figure out what caused the officer to crash into a fence.

Pieces of the smashed police cruiser were thrown more than 100 feet from the crash that killed Officer Brennan Rabain. The off-duty officer was driving along Greenbelt Road in Lanham around 3 a.m. Saturday when investigators believe he attempted to stop a speeding vehicle and lost control of his cruiser.

"It's important for this police department---it's important for this community---to find out what happened," said Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw.

Now police have released new video from a red light camera taken moments before the crash. You can see a bus go through the intersection, followed by Rabain's cruiser on the right and a minivan on the left.

Investigators want to talk to people inside the bus or the minivan that may have witnessed the crash.

"We collected as much evidence as possible, spoke to as many witnesses as we could to give us a better indication of what occurred," said Prince George's County Police Major Rob Brewer.

But so far, the only eyewitness is Officer Rabain's girlfriend, who was the passenger in the patrol car. She had minor injuries.

Now police hope this video can provide answers about how one of their own died so tragically.

Investigators say the dashboard camera in Officer Rabain's car was not working.

Funeral services for Officer Rabain will be held on Thursday at Victory Christian Ministries.
