WEATHER BLOG: Beautiful & Breezy

A high pressure system located in eastern Canada continues to spread dry air out across the Eastern Region early this morning. This will allow for a good deal of sunshine today. But, especially in those areas where clouds and fog broke rather quickly yesterday, it won't be as warm this afternoon. These are the places which wound up in the lower 60s, mostly along the I-95 corridor. So, there will be several locations that will fail to get out of the 40s, or should be about ten degrees lower than they were yesterday.

Tonight will be relatively clear and very chilly. The ridge of high pressure will be located over New England early tomorrow morning, and the wind beneath it will be very light. Therefore, the coldest outlying areas will be in the low 20s, while the big cites will be near 30° at dawn tomorrow. The temperature should return to the 40s tomorrow, and the sky should start out fairly sunny. However, clouds will begin to overspread the area from the south and west tomorrow afternoon, as moisture in the mid and upper levels begins to press northeastward from a low pressure system that will be located in the Mississippi Valley. As we had pointed out yesterday, this still appears to be a situation where the moisture overrunning the cool and drier surface air in the Northeast will cause rain to start breaking out late on Friday night (although that rain should start before midnight in areas south of the Mason-Dixon Line).

Saturday's rain is 'still on', and it should provide us with a decent soaking -- the cumulative rainfall totals are expected to be between 0.50" and 1.00". While this new rain is not expected to produce any major flooding of streets or highways, the combination of ice breaking up on area rivers and streams and this weekend's rain may cause them to start rising. Temperatures on Saturday will be probably be in the mid or upper 50s, due to the clouds and periods of rain. But, some 60s could be "knocking on the door". The steadiest rain is still expected to move out to sea late on Saturday, and then clouds will break for some sunshine on Sunday.
