Md. Man Sentenced To Life, No Parole In WVU Student's Death

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- A Maryland man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of a West Virginia University student.

Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker followed the jury's recommendation of no mercy, meaning Robert Hernandez Jr. won't be eligible for parole.

Media outlets report that the Cumberland, Maryland, resident was sentenced Monday. He was convicted of first-degree murder in January.

Prosecutors say Hernandez stabbed 19-year-old Devante Waites in the abdomen during an argument at a bar in Morgantown in August 2014. Waites was a freshman communications student from Fairmont.

Hernandez told the judge that he is innocent. His attorney, Sherman Lambert, says Hernandez plans to appeal his conviction.
