Habitat For Humanity To Dedicate Home To Slain Md. Sailor

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Habitat for Humanity says it's dedicating a home in western Maryland to a local sailor who was fatally shot in Norfolk, Virginia, one year ago.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the honor stems from Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Mayo's life insurance.

His mother Sharon Blair used the proceeds to pay off the mortgage on her Habitat home in Hagerstown.

Mortgage payments on Habitat homes help finance future homes. The charity says it'll put Blair's lump sum payment to work right away.

Blair says it's a blessing to know her son's sacrifice will help another family get a home. She says she plans to help build it.

Mayo died protecting another sailor from a civilian intruder at the Norfolk naval station on March 24, 2014.
