Md. Senate Votes To Raise Judges' Mandatory Retirement Age

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Senate has voted to raise the mandatory retirement age of judges from 70 to 75.

The Senate passed the bill unanimously on Tuesday. It now goes to the House of Delegates.

The measure is a constitutional amendment, so voters would decide whether to raise the mandatory retirement age in the next election, if the House passes the bill.

The state's mandatory retirement age applies for all circuit, district and appellate court judges. Currently, retired judges may be appointed on a temporary basis by the chief judge of the Court of Appeals to serve as a judge on any court, except an orphans court, regardless of age.
