Lady Terps On Their Way To 'Sweet 16' To Take On Duke

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) -- Sweet 16. March Madness is in full swing and the Lady Terps are hoping to make a return trip to the Final Four.

The team takes on Duke this weekend in Washington state.

Marcus Washington reports on the excitement on campus.

The women's basketball team has been giving students and fans something to cheer about all season, and they're hoping it will continue.

It's the journey to the championship earned after hard work and determination. The Lady Terps are on their way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament to take on long-time rival Duke.

"It's great. It's great for the school, especially since Maryland's men's team didn't do well. It's great to see the women doing great for us," one Terps fan said.

On campus, students are excited to see the women's basketball team push to bring the NCAA Championship back home.

"If our women's team continues to succeed like they are and make it even further then I think people here will get really invested in it because people here thrive on competition," said one Terps fan.

The last time the Lady Terps won the NCAA Championship was in 2006. That was nine years ago. But with the excitement on campus now, many students say this year is the year for them to do it again.

"I hope that you guys make it and you keep all that energy and spirit up. And no matter what, university will love you," one Terps fan said.

While students say they won't make it to Spokane, Washington for the game, they send a few words to Duke: "Fear the Turtle!"

"I'll be watching on TV cheering them on," one Terps fan said.

If the Terps make it, this year's women's Final Four is in Tampa, Florida.
