AACo. Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation

CROFTON, Md. (WJZ)— A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after a police-involved shooting in Anne Arundel County.

Tracey Leong has the latest on the investigation.

It happened here on the 1700 block of Chamberlain Court in Crofton, shocking neighbors in this typically quiet area.

A frantic call to police around 1:00 p.m. Saturday with concerns a 21-year-old man is threatening to harm himself.

"Very scary situation for the officers who approached because you quite frankly don't know what you're encountering," said Lt. TJ Smith, Anne Arundel County Police.

When officers arrive they try talking to the suspect before making entry into the home. Once they get inside, the suspect points a rifle at them and they're forced to shoot him in the stomach, police said.

People living nearby who know the suspect are surprised by the violence.

"I was shocked just because it's Crofton, I didn't really think something like this would go down here," one neighbor said.

Leong: "Can you describe what the suspect is like?"

"Yea he usually kept to himself, quiet kid. Ya know… harmless. "

Police say these are not uncommon calls.

"These are frightening calls. We actually respond to calls like these on a regular basis," Smith said.

There was another family member inside who was unharmed and police say they were not being held against their will.

The officers are on paid administrative leave during this investigation.
