AACo. Officer Injured While Helping Suspect In Crofton Shooting

CROFTON, Md. (WJZ) -- Anne Arundel County police are revealing more details about the officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon in Crofton.

After police received a report that a man inside a home in the 1700 block of Chamberlain Court may harm himself and others, officers responded to the scene just shortly after 1 p.m.

They took a tactical position outside the home and knwocked on doors and windows in homes if getting someone to the door.

When no one responded, they decided to force entry into the home.

They immediately encountered a man with a rifle-style gun at the top of the steps.

An officer on scene -- a 30-year veteran supervisor -- shot the suspect in the stomach.

Immediately after the shooting, officers bgean to perform life-saving aid on the suspects. When one officer used his pocketknife to cut the shirt of the suspect's body, he cut himself in the arm.

The officer was taken to the hospital and later released.

The suspect was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where as of this report he is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police said they have been to the residence before on calls, but didn't share details. The officer who fired at the suspect has been put on routine paid administrative leave.

No other officers were injured, nor was any other resident of the home.

Charges have not been filed at this time and the suspect will not be identified until charges are filed.
