TOWSON, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s prison agency says an inmate was accidentally scalded to death by steam and hot water after he damaged a heating unit in his cell at the Jessup Correctional Institution.
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services released details of 35-year-old Louis Leysath’s death in a statement Wednesday. He died Feb. 20.
The cause and manner of death were first reported Tuesday by WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun.
The department says three correctional officers remain on paid administrative leave pending completion of an internal investigation. The agency says it’s also reviewing prison procedures.
Leysath was serving a life sentence for a murder in Charles County. The department says he wasn’t on suicide watch but had been placed in a special observation cell after exhibiting erratic behavior.
