WEATHER BLOG: Saturday

Despite being under a more settled part of the nation on Saturday, a weak shortwave will be passing over Upstate New York and New England today. Luckily it will be far enough to the north to allow for a decent day, and probably the better half of the weekend. High pressure will cross the region in the wake of that shortwave but cold air advection aloft will prevent us from mixing down as warm of temperatures for the second the half of the weekend. Despite being cooler, I would still say Sunday will be a nice day, and overall the weekend will be rather pleasant for April.

While Monday looked pretty locked up yesterday, some modeling changes have occurred and the level of certainty isn't as high now. Low pressure will be approaching from the west, however a dry slot starting to show on the modeling, along with a slightly faster solution showing up in a few models, may mean the heaviest rain comes on Sunday night and early Monday morning, with a dry slot bringing a drier but still dreary afternoon. Either way, we can market Monday as not that great, although the faster timing and potential dry slot have brought temperatures up for this day. A pressure gradient will bring rather breezy to borderline windy conditions.

Monday night will see that last of the steadier rain pull away, and Tuesday will certainly be an improvement. The catch, however, will be the fact that air aloft will be mighty cold and with the closed low sitting over the Great Lakes there will be instability around. Clouds could make a comeback during the afternoon and while we are going dry for now, a pop up shower or even thundershower cannot be ruled out. Wednesday wont be much different, the main change being that the cooler air aloft will mean mixed out surface temperatures will be running a few degrees cooler. A wave of low pressure passes to the north on Wednesday night and we probably see a few brief showers. The upper low will be sitting closer on Thursday and bring a passing shower or two and cloudier skies on Thursday, along with cooler conditions. Going beyond this point a second upper low injects itself into the trough in the east and the two pieces will Fujiwhara effect around each other and keep us in a pretty locked up patter for a while.
