Skipping The Security Lines At BWI

LINTHICUM, Md. (WJZ)--Planning a trip often involves getting to the airport extra early because of those long lines. Now BWI joins an expanding network of airports across the country offering a new service that promises to change that.

Amy Yensi has the details.

The goal is to save travelers time and make the flight process as smooth as possible.

The VIP treatment comes to BWI provided by the New York-based company called CLEAR. A new members-only service lets travelers avoid the hassle and skip to the front of the security check line.

"I'm looking forward to not spending so much time on line," one traveler said.

Travelers with valid identification can check-in at a CLEAR kiosk with a touch of a fingerprint and scan of the iris, bypassing one of the most time-consuming steps before boarding a plane.

"Security line check-in waits can vary from 10 minutes to 45 minutes and with CLEAR there's a guarantee of predictability and speed," said Charmaine Taylor, CLEAR.

Travelers can sign up for the service online or at any of the clear stations in the airport.

Nearly three dozen CLEAR employees are now stationed at BWI to help with registration and verify documents and then it's off to the separate expedited line.

Yolanda Lopez puts the guarantee of getting through in five minutes or less to the test. "Problem with my fingerprinting. It wouldn't register. The same thing with my iris," she said.

This traveler says she's willing to pay the $15 dollar monthly fee because the kiosk is easy to use .

"Pretty self-explanatory. I was pretty taken a back at how much the machine knew about other parts of my life," Janet Stephens said.

CLEAR will be up and running at Miami International Airport next month, making it the 12th airport to offer the service.

CLEAR enrollment will be available at BWI gates A, B and D.
