City Councilman: "We Have To Systematically Build And Rebuild"

BALTIMORE (CBS Baltimore) -- After a night of unrest in Baltimore, city leaders are trying to find ways to keep the peace.

Baltimore City Councilman Brandon Scott talked to The Fan radio this morning about how he hopes to bring change to the city as well as his thoughts on the violence.

"[The] 300 man march is against all violence. We don't care how someone dies," Scott said. "We are against all violence -- all violence, police, citizen on citizen, domestic it doesn't matter. We want violence in our city to stop and what we are going to continue to do is be a show of force and being a show of citizens and being responsible."

Scott, who was born in Baltimore, said it was worse back then, than it is today.

"I was born into a Baltimore where my neighborhood was a war zone as my childhood," he said.

Although Scott understands that people are upset about Freddie Gray's death, he doesn't think riots are going to solve the problems.

"I'm pissed off for a lot of reasons," Scott said. "I'm pissed off because we have folks destroying our city, their own neighborhood and the neighborhoods that haven't reclaimed from the 1968 riots. I'm pissed off that we have let it get to this point."

But he thinks the problem is larger than some unruly youths.

"It's not just about Freddie Gray, its generations of frustration, generations of neglect of self responsibility of family and community, generations of neglect from government, generations of neglect from clergy, from everybody. This is not one persons fault this everyone who has called themselves a concerned person of Baltimore because we have let this fester."

He said although people want a quick fix -- "it's not going to happen overnight."

"We have to systematically build and rebuild, constantly build and rebuild it's going to take a long time and for everyone to get involved," Scott added. "I've been saying this for so long you can't just go home and just say I'm ok, I'm good."
