Pelosi Calls For Changes From Police And Justice System

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is appealing for peace in her native Baltimore and says "something different" is needed from police and the justice system.

She says Freddie Gray's death in police custody "demands answer." Pelosi says she hopes Baltimore can move forward to a "productive peace" but that there needs to be recognition that the reasons for the unrest are complex.

Pelosi suggests responses including body cameras, a summer jobs program and better training, and says Democrats are advancing legislative solutions.

Pelosi is a California representative who was born in Baltimore and whose father and brother served as mayor.

Her brother was mayor when devastating riots broke out after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, but Pelosi says "This is not anywhere near what that was."
