LONDON (CBS) — The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge now have a new baby girl.

Duchess Kate Middleton gave birth at 8:34 a.m. GMT, according to Kensington Palace officials.

The baby girl, named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, weighs 8 Ibs. 3 oz.

The Duchess was admitted into St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London at 6 a.m. in the early stages of labor, according to palace officials.

Prince William was present for the birth of their second child, there was no official word on big brother Prince George’s whereabouts.

A town crier in elaborate costume alerted the die-hard royal fans who had been camping for days outside the hospital, reading from a scroll and clanging his bell to welcome the new royal.

Much like Prince George’s birth in July 2013, palace officials are using social media to spread the good news.

Palace officials also tweeted the Duchess and her child were both doing well.

The second royal baby is fourth in line to the British throne; behind grandfather Prince Charles, dad Prince William and older brother Prince George. That means Prince Harry will become fifth in line to the throne.

In 2013, Britain changed a centuries-old ruling on gender that put boys before girls in the line of succession. Under the old system, a princess’ succession spot could be replaced by a younger brother. Reports said William and Kate didn’t know the baby’s gender prior to birth.

Following the announcement, hundreds of tourist and well-wishers crowded outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, cheering and screaming as officials placed a traditional birth announcement on a golden easel.
