'Dirty Dancing' Comes To The Hippodrome

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The classic 1980s movie "Dirty Dancing" has long been a fan favorite. Now Johnny and Baby's love story is on stage at the Hippodrome Theatre.

Amy Yensi got a chance to meet one of the stars of the show.

Not only that, she gave Amy a few dance lessons.

The song, the risque choreography and, of course, the lift. "Dirty Dancing" is the classic story on stage and it is here in Baltimore. The theater production of the 80s drama starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey debuted at the Hippodrome this week.

Actress Gillian Abbott stars as Frances "Baby" Houseman.

"I couldn't have imagined a role that would bring together my two loves in the most real way," Abbott said. "That being dancing and acting."

The Canadian-born actress was classically trained in ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop...and she taught Amy some of the show's choreography. The fancy footwork is not as easy as it looks in the show or movie.

Fans of the movie are likely to love the play.

"It is very true to the film. It's all of what we love from the film is in there and then there are a few extra added scenes," Abbott said.

Aside from the racy dance moves, theater-goers can expect actual dialogue from the film. Eleanor Bergstein, the film's screenwriter, also wrote the stage version. It's not a musical but includes a live band and singers to belt out the iconic power ballad, the song that's inspired people to get up and move for decades.

"Dirty Dancing" will be on stage through Sunday, May 24. To find out how you can buy tickets to see "Dirty Dancing," click here.
