Special Ops 5K Honors Those Lost, Raises Money For Navy SEAL Foundation

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who gave their lives for their country and in Canton there a special event Monday morning to honor them.

WJZ's Ron Matz has more on why hundreds of people took to the streets to run for some of America's heroes.

They raised the flag and much more in Canton Friday where hundreds were running to raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation -- and on this Memorial Day everyone wanted to be there.

"Both my husband and my dad were in the military, so I obviously have a huge soft sport for the military," said runner Michelle England," this means a lot."

"It's Memorial Day," said runner Wayne Archibald, of Randallstown. "It's a great cause, anything to support out people in service."

The Special Ops 5K is sponsored by Boston Street Running and the city's police and fire departments.

"We're just proud that we're able to be apar of something that not only people a chance to exercise, but also a chance to show their respect for the men and women who have served our country," said John Burke, secretary-treasurer of the city firefighter's Local 734. "The fire and police do our jobs in the streets everyday, but they're serving for our freedom."

After the race, Mission BBQ provided the food and a salute.

"Is there anything else you should be doing on Memorial Day that taking time to remember our heroes?" said Bill Kraus, co-owner of Mission BBQ. "Those who have done so much for us. We're just prod to be able to do our part."

About 300 runners participated in the race and the money they raise will go directly to the families of Navy SEALs lots in combat.

"We pay for all the expenses so everything that's raised goes right to the Navy SEAL Foundation," said Gene Ryan, President of the Baltimore City FOP, Lodge 3. "It's our way of giving back to show our appreciation and honor those who gave all."

Luke Sullivan of Annapolis was the first across the Special Ops run finish line. He did the 5K in 16 minutes and 35 seconds.
