City Catholic School Debuts New Playground Thanks To Donors

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- If you talk to elementary school teachers they'll tell you the value of a good recess.

As Mike Schuh reports, a Catholic school in Baltimore -- thanks to donors -- upped its game.

The lot where Sister Rita, the principal here at Cardinal Shehan School, takes a shot used to be rubble.

Now it's blessed by the Archbishop.

Betty Contino shows us the next blessing -- a state of the art playground with a deep rubber floor. A big difference from playing on asphalt.

The playground is named after this woman, Principal Sister Rita Michelle.

"It's a day that started 26 years ago, the dream of some administrators and parents, but never came to fruition because we could never raise the money," Sister Rita said.

That's where the Women's Education Alliance came in. They talked five donors into paying the quarter of a million dollars.

"We we had a dream, the children should have space to play," Contino, an alliance representative said.

So this has been a day to sing about, reinforced by the words of the leader of the Catholic Church in Baltimore.

"We're talking ab lot these days about our beloved city of Baltimore and we're looking for things that will really give young people a bright future." Archbishop William Lori said  "We're looking for things that will make our community better."

Things that will let the kids blow off steam, so they will be ready to learn when they return to the classroom.

Thanks to different donors, another larger playground will open this September at another inner city Catholic school.
