Off-duty Prince George's Officer Charged With Murder
WALDORF, Md. (AP) -- An off-duty police officer from Prince George's County was charged with murder after police said a child custody dispute led to a fatal shooting at a fast-food restaurant in Maryland.
Richard Conway, 26, was charged in the May 20 killing of 25-year-old Michael Mange and the shooting of Mange's 24-year-old wife, Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw said. Police say the woman, who is expected to survive, is the mother of two of Conway's children and had been in the middle of a custody battle with Conway.
Police said the Manges had come up to Waldorf from the Norfolk, Virginia, area expecting to take custody of the two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, when instead they were confronted by Conway's mother, Caroline Conway.
Authorities said Caroline Conway fired the fatal shots but that police have text messages between her and her son to implicate both in the killings, which they described as planned. The 51-year-old grandmother has already been charged in the shooting.
Police say Richard Conway has worked for the force for three years and is a patrol officer. He has been suspended without pay pending the investigation.
At a news conference Tuesday in LaPlata, Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry said investigators are still looking for the gun. He said ballistics evidence from the victims shows wounds consistent with the type of gun issued to police in Prince George's County.
He asked anyone who may have seen either Conway in the time shortly after the shooting to contact police.
