Former Md. Gov. Announces 2016 Presidential Bid

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Martin O'Malley throws his hat in the presidential ring.

Political reporter Pat Warren reports O'Malley's announcement drew a crowd at Federal Hill -- an enthusiastic sendoff for the challenging months ahead.

There's no mistaking it now.

"Governor O'Malley fought for the Dream Act," one supporter said.

"Governor O'Malley championed same-sex marriage in Maryland," said another.

"None of this would have been possible had it not been for Governor Martin O'Malley," another supporter said.

Now the moment supporters have been waiting for...

"We will not talk about doing big things, we will do them," an ad for O'Malley said.

In his bid for the presidency, former governor Martin O'Malley promises to bring back the American Dream.

"We must build anew," he said.

The former mayor and governor is taking his case to the nation.

FULL ANNOUNCEMENT HERE:

"It's about us," O'Malley said. "And we cannot and will not rebuild the American Dream here at home, though, by catering to the voices of the privileged and the powerful."

Both of which he'll have to battle to win the nomination.

"I've got news for the bullies of Wall Street -- the presidency is not a crown to be passed back and forth by you between two royal families," said O'Malley.

"It is a sacred trust to be earned from the American people and exercised on behalf of the people of these United States," he continued. "And that is why today to you and to all who can hear my voice, I declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States, and I am running for you. May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America."

And with that, Governor O'Malley is now the third official entry in the race to become the Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential election.

And right about now, he's in Iowa. From there -- New Hampshire.

Hillary Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders have already declared their candidacy.
