Local Org. Brings Fitness And Nutrition Into The Classroom

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Helping kids stay healthy! BMoreFit partnering with Baltimore City Schools to promote classroom fitness and nutrition in between lessons.

WJZ's Tracey Leong explains.

BMoreFit entered the city school three years ago, and since getting involved, they've seen a drastic improvement in students' performance.

Moving away from the traditional classroom, these students take breaks throughout the day by getting active, incorporating fitness into their curriculum.

"I like the exercise breaks that we get to get up and stretch our bodies," said Joi, 9 years old.

"It's fun and when you do it with your friends and play around with them you get to work out with them," Demonte said.

These Holabird Academy third graders are being led by BMoreFit Executive Director Vicki Marcus.

"Our children love us coming into the school rooms," she said.

The goal of BMoreFit is to promote a healthy lifestyle for school aged children.

"Important to be healthy because you can grow strong," one student says.

Third grade teacher Erika Savage says it also helps them stay focused.

"As teachers that is part of our job to teach them what healthy eating is and what healthy bodies are and how they can be the best student they can be," Savage says.

Habits Savage and Marcus hope will extend beyond the classroom.

"So that they can integrate movement into their lives, they can learn about fitness, education, and carry it on in their lifestyle," said Marcus.

And as these kids head into summer many plan to keep up this active lifestyle by: "Playing 60 minutes a day" and "eating lots of vegetables."

BMoreFit is currently in five city schools but they are looking to expand.

BMoreFit will be presenting their first DanceWalk at Artscape in July and they are still looking for sponsors.
