Body Recovered From Potomac River Near Recreation Area

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) -- Fire officials say a man's body has been recovered from the Potomac River near a recreation area just west of the nation's capital.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says a hiker spotted the body around 3:30 p.m. Sunday near the Carderock Recreation Area, which is part of the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

Piringer says crews pulled the body from the water around 4 p.m. just ahead of an approaching thunderstorm.

The man has not been identified. Piringer says the body is not that of a swimmer who went missing on June 3 about 2 miles away, and he says there are no other active reports of people missing in the area.

Police are investigating the man's death.
