MCHENRY, Md. (AP) -- A man is in critical condition after police say he and an 11-month-old child were hit by a car while walking along a two-lane highway in the western Maryland town of Accident.

Maryland State Police said Thursday the child was released after both victims were flown to the Conemaugh (KAH'-nah-maw) Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Wednesday evening.

Police say 26-year-old Dennis Garlitz Jr. was pushing the child in a stroller along the shoulder of southbound U.S. 219 when they were hit by a Chevrolet Corvette, also traveling south, shortly before 5 p.m.

Police say the driver left the scene but returned within minutes. A state trooper was flagged down by others at the scene.

Police say the crash is under investigation and no charges have yet been filed.
