Sculptor Selected To Create Bronze Statue Of Lefty Grove
LONACONING, Md. (AP) -- An artist has been commissioned to sculpt a bronze statue of Hall of Fame pitcher "Lefty" Grove and install it in his hometown of Lonaconing.
The Cumberland Times-News reports that Baltimore native Susan Luery's $72,000 bid to create the sculpture was selected by the Lefty Grove Statue Fundraising Project committee.
Project coordinator Bucky Schriver says the organization has raised $32,000 but is still looking to raise $70,000 more.
Luery says she will soon create a couple of clay models from which the committee can choose the statue's pose.
Luery is known for creating the 16-foot-tall bronze statue of Babe Ruth that stands at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Robert Moses Grove, known better as "Lefty," was elected to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 1947.
