Governor Hogan Finishing Up First Round Of Chemo

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Governor Larry Hogan is wrapping up his first round of chemotherapy on a positive note: with a lot of positive energy coming from outside the hospital.

Political reporter Pat Warren has more on how Marylanders are responding to the governor's battle against cancer.

Where get well cards and letters once reigned, social media is now flooding the room.

Four days after announcing he has stage 3, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Governor Hogan started a 24/7 four-day attack on fast-growing cancer cells. The chemotherapy will kill the cancer cells.

"They want to kill the cancer and keep you alive," Hogan said.

On Facebook Tuesday, the governor wrote, "Good morning! Starting day four of 24-hour chemo treatment. Still feeling really strong. I think cancer picked the wrong fight! Will be out of the hospital and heading home tomorrow night! Feeling the love, support and prayers. It means the world to me and really helps keep me going."

"We mean this with all of our hearts. All we want is our governor to get well and get well soon," said one supporter.

The governor is hearing from all over Maryland, including those who are in similar circumstances.

One comment read, "Yesterday was my last chemo. My prayers now turn to you."

Another comment read, "As a cancer survivor, I am in your corner."

And a third said, "As a two-time cancer survivor, praying you only have to go through it once."

And another comment read, "My dad had the same cancer; you are not alone."

An additional comment read, "Sending lots of prayers, my cousin and friend is going through this same battle."

Another comment read simply, "Stay strong, stay strong, stay strong."

"They say you're going to go through hell and back again but you're going to love it when you get back," Hogan said.

This is the beginning of an 18-week long process with six additional rounds of chemo.

Governor Hogan says he will continue his duties in office as much as possible through the process.
