Md. Man Gets 35 Years In California Baby's Sex-Abuse Case

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A former children's counselor in Maryland and Arizona been sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexual exploitation charges in a case involving a Southern California pediatric nurse accused of sexually abusing his 6-week-old foster child.

Thirty-five-year-old Stephen Schaffner of Greensboro, Maryland, was also ordered to register as a sex offender at sentencing Thursday in federal court in Baltimore.

The case involves 51-year-old Michael William Lutts, a San Diego County pediatric nurse who pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation in January. Charging documents say Lutts got custody of a prematurely born foster baby last year, and immediately began filming himself molesting the boy.

Prosecutors say Schaffner directed Lutts to abuse the infant and send him the photos and videos.
